What is the difference between ASME and ASTM of valves?

In any technical industry whether it is construction, mining, and more, there must be certain standards. Those standards mean explicit series of requirements to be fulfilled by the company in term of materials, products, and services. Even when only one of them has failed to complete the requirements, it will be considered as beyond the specifications. The common technical standards are often developed by government by conducting cooperation with some other parties. Meanwhile, it is possible also that the standards are also determined personally by a certain company, military, supervision department and others.

In US, the technical standard regulated namely ANSI (American National Standard Institute). It is divided into two; they are ASME and ASTM. For production of double block and bleed valve, here are the applications and difference of them.

ASME

ASME stands for American Society of Mechanical Engineer. It is basically a global standard of mechanical engineer that has been adapted with some other requirements and then regulated in the US. This valve is applied by multinational companies. Therefore, it also deals with the regulations enacted by international organizations like North American Free Trade Agreement (NAFTA), established by European Union to facilitate the international merger through the reduction of importing cost. The companies involved in this consolidation are able to sell the products only in one market.

Here is the Overview and Code from ASME standard applied by the engineers to design products in the manufactures; ASME/ ANSI B16.5 and ASME/ANSI 16.10,ASME/ANSI 16.34 standards for valves. These standards are for the measurement of temperature, sizes and methods to reduce the aperture, signs, and minimal requirements for materials, dimensions, and tolerance. Well, the double block and bleed valve must be ensured to require all of them.

ASTM

ASTM is from American Society for Testing and Materials. It is also commonly known as ASTM International. This standard is recognized globally in term of development and delivery for voluntary consensus. Nowadays, there are around 12,000 ASTM standard is applied all around the world to improve the products’ quality, increase the security, facilitate the marketing access and trading, and build customers’ trust.

The double block and bleed valve with ASTM standard means that the valve has been pass through some process. They are testing methods, specifications, guidance, and practices to make sure that the product can be applied well and in line with all the related disciplines. More than that, it must also be environmentally friendly while being used in the industry.

Conclusion

Both ASME and ASTM Valves are important and required in modern industries. They are the most recognized standards and adapted by other technical standards in foreign countries to improve the quality of products including the valves. ASME is related to the disciplines of how the valves are able to produce in high quality. Meanwhile, ASTM is more about the practice and test. For double block and bleed valve, it is when the product is tested and put into practice in the field.Article kindly provided by KP-LOK
